Lesson
Description
|
Students will be read the Grouchy Ladybug
by Eric Carle aloud in class. The teacher will read the story to the students
while students follow the elapsed time using small analog clocks provided by
the teacher. Students are expected to show the accurate end time of the story
using these clocks. Students will then engage in a brief discussion with the
teacher on how to solve problems based on time (students are expected to
explain how timelines can help solve time-based problems).
Once the story has been read, students
will receive a recording sheet and a scenario. Students will record
information they find from the scenario on the sheet and work to solve a
question based on the scenario suing timelines as a strategy. The first
question will be based on finding end time given a start time and elapsed
time.
A second scenario will be given focusing
on having the students find elapsed time given time intervals. Students will
use timelines as a strategy to solve these problems.
Students will then focus on a we do, you
do sheet which begins with a scenario in which students will solve a problem
that will focus on finding both elapsed time and end time while using
non-benchmark units of time.
Students will complete the lesson by
finishing an exit ticket based on the lesson.

Read the Grouchy Ladybug to students.
The students will keep track of the intervals of time using small plastic
analog clocks. Students will then be asked probing questions (such as What
are some ways that you can keep track of time?
What are some things that you do that
take up a great deal of time?) for a brief discussion leading into how they
can solve problems based on time.

Teacher
will read out The Grouchy Ladybug to students while displaying the book on
the overhead projector, so all students have the opportunity to see the book.

Students are listening
attentively to the story while using small handheld analog clocks (provided
by the teacher) to keep track of the intervals of time (i.e. students will
have their clocks display 1:00 when the book mentions the time of the day is
1:00).

Students will be given a three-part
recording sheet where they will be asked to answer questions based on the
scenario given such as, “What do you notice? What info do you have to solve?
Explain how you would solve this using a complete sentence.” This scenario
will focus on finding the end time after analyzing elapsed time.

will call on random students to answer questions on recording sheet.

Afternoon scenario (as written in the
explain portion below). Students need to keep track of all the intervals of
time that are being explored as they work to solve the problem using the same
recording sheet as used in the Explore portion. This problem will focus on
students finding elapsed time given start and end time.

behavior, change of schedule, shortage of supplies, or other extenuating

lesson in which half of the class will be following the given lesson while
